Kenya's coast runs 500km along the Indian Ocean, and the two names you'll hear most are Diani, south of Mombasa, and Watamu, to the north. Both have reef-protected turquoise water and powder sand. But they feel different — and choosing the right one makes the trip.
Diani: the polished classic
Seventeen kilometres of award-winning white sand, backed by palms and a string of established resorts, restaurants and beach bars. Diani is the easiest coast choice: direct flights to Ukunda airstrip from Nairobi, a wide range of accommodation from boutique to five-star, and plenty to do — kitesurfing, skydiving, the Colobus forest, Shimba Hills day safaris. If you want beach plus buzz, this is it.
Watamu: the quiet marine gem
Watamu is smaller, sleepier and arguably prettier at the waterline — a series of coral-sand bays around one of Africa's best marine parks. Snorkelling and diving are superb, Mida Creek offers kayak-and-sunset magic, and the Gedi Ruins add a touch of mystery. Fewer big resorts, more boutique hotels and villas. If your idea of beach is barefoot and unhurried, Watamu wins.
The verdict
